Club News and Events 2009

Christmas 2009

A Christmas Social get together on the 16th December was the final event in our 2009 calendar. With mulled wine and mince pies - all on the house - and the opportunity for an extended chat about video and festive matters.

North vs South 2009

The theme for the 2009 North versus South competition was “Trapped” and the entry from Altrincham Video Society featured Tim Burgess, a local chain-saw carver, ‘releasing’ an elf from an oak tree where he had been trapped by a wicked witch. The film showed the various stages of creating the elf, over a background commentary from the elf complaining “mind my chest”, “careful down there” “oh that was close” etc. as the carver worked away with his chain saws and other tools.
Unfortunately our film did not make it through to the final 5 chosen to represent the North this year.

Film of the Year - 28th October 2009

It comes but once a year... not Christmas, but the AVS Film of the Year competition. Any film that was entered in one of the year's other competitions is eligible, and this year we had a record thirteen films competing for the coveted Broussa Trophy.
This year's winner is none other than your genial webmaster Clive Palmer, with his haunting "Crich Uncovered" - a evocative musical chronicle of the tramway museum at Crich in Derbyshire, shot over the course of four long visits. One of the incredible shots involved Clive risking his life to get a tramline level view of an approaching double decker. Still, what price art?
The runner-up also gets a trophy - the Perkins Cup, which I'm proud to say I won last year but now I'll need to polish and hand back to Ray Danson, who took it with his fascinating "Ants' Supper" - a study of an ant colony taking a captured worm back to the nest.
The contest was judged as last year by David and Sheila Andrew who again delivered an expert critique of every film.
Must get started on a film for next year... Graham.

Chroma Key Session 3 with Audrey Hughes - 2nd September 2009

Audrey came in to perform her act - a recitle about a cello set against the clubs green screen. Loads of members turned up with their cameras to capture the performance.
The results will hopefully be seen at a forthcoming Bring & Show Evening.
Thanks to Audrey for coming along and making it a wonderful evening.

Altrincham Festival - 4th July 2009

The club participated in the Altrincham Festival on Saturday 4th July 2009.
We set up a mini studio with an autocue and playback monitor to challenge visitors to "see if they could be a successful TV presenter".

Guest Speaker: Joe Cieszynski - Multi-Camera Shooting

Joe gave us a very interesting and fast presentation on the use of multiple cameras when shooting a film. Joe is a professional trainer and has been filming dance shows, concerts and theatre for many years with amateur equipment. Thanks Joe for an excellent evening. (Did anyone notice he once wrote a book about closed circuit television? :-) )

Trivention: Cheadle & Gatley vs Rochdale May 09

Cheadle & Gatley won with the best programme of the evening, and Rochdale won with the best film which was called "Out of the Wood" by Geoff Alexander. The respective clubs can be seen here having receiving their prizes from the clubs Chairman Eric Flowers.

Chroma Key Session 2: Not 1, Not 2 But 3!

Another example of using chroma key was made during a recent technical evening at the club. By the way, they aren't triplets!

Chroma Key Session: Jean Takes A Fall

At a recent club meeting, member Jean Taylor was the victim of the club's chroma key skills.
